At Inspire Health we realise that caring for your mental health is as important as caring for your physical health. We have put together some resources that can help you.

Mental Health Support

Counselling services at the Practice

A counsellor is available two days a week for mental health problems such as depression, anxiety and stress. One of these sessions is for young people.

The counsellor has started at Avenue House Surgery for all patients of Inspire Health, and we are also planning to have a counsellor at the Hasland surgery around December 2023. You can contact your GP practice and ask for a referral. You can also self-refer by calling the mental health charity Relate on 01246 382 772 and saying you are an Inspire Health patient. Relate is the mental health charity which is working in partnership with us to help patients get the mental health support they need. A recent review has shown good results for patient attendance and satisfaction

Other support

  • Talk to a friend or family and let them know how you are feeling. Give them a chance to help. You may be feeling you are of no value to anyone, but you will be wrong and there will be people who care about you and value you. Remember when you are feeling this bad, your thoughts do become distorted and you will not be seeing the picture as others may see it. Check out Mind charity's article on 'how can I open up to friends and family' Mind charity's webpage for more advice.

Urgent and Emergency Mental Health Support

If you are struggling and feeling alone or having thoughts of suicide, then we want to help you. We have listed below some ways of getting urgent mental health support.

Urgent mental health helplines and contact details

  • The Safe Haven and Crisis House is a mental health service that keeps people safe if they are struggling with a mental health crisis and are at risk of self harm. The service has recently opened in November 2023 at Grassmoor 188 North Wingfield Rd.  S42 5EG. You can self refer by calling their helpline on 0800 0280077 or by booking a face to face appointment between 4.30pm and 12.30 am on their webpageYou may also be referred by a healthcare practitioner. There are some urgent beds that can be accessed through the crisis team. This mental health service will help people get the mental health care they need and may be more suitable than a busy A&E department.

  • To talk about anything that is upsetting you or if you feel like you're struggling to cope, contact the mental health charity Samaritans. They are available 24/7. You can call them for free on 116 123 or email at jo@samaritans.org for a response within 24 hours.

  • If you are under 35 and struggling with thoughts of suicide, you can call Papyrus HOPELINEUK on 0800 068 4141 or by texting them on 07786 209697.

  • If you would prefer not to talk over the phone but want mental health support, text SHOUT to 85258. SHOUT offers a confidential 24/7 text service providing support if you are in crisis and need immediate support.

  • If you are under 19 years of age, you can call Childline on 0800 1111 (Free of charge) or you can visit their website for more information. The number will not appear on your phone bill.

  • If you need urgent mental health support but aren't sure where to go, visit 111 online or call 111 for free, confidential support. The NHS 111 service will direct you to the best place to get help for your symptoms.

  • If you don't feel that you can keep yourself or someone else safe and need emergency help, call 999 or go to your local A&E. Only call 999 in life-threatening emergencies.

If you need urgent mental health support and want to talk to a GP:

If you are an Inspire Health patient and would like to talk with a doctor urgently because you feel you need help today, are at risk of harm and you feel too unwell to be able to answer questions, go to the ‘request an appointment’ tab on our Home page, select 'submit medical request' and enter  ‘mental health’ in the first option box with your phone number. Our triage team will prioritise your request and be in touch with support. The service is open from 8am Monday to Friday.

If the appointment tab has closed for the day, then you can phone the surgery on 01246 244 040, ask the call handler for urgent mental health support and if a GP can call you on the same day. Where this is not possible due to capacity, will will ensure you are provided with a suitable alternative. Please be assured that there is always support available to you.

If your health concern doesn't need an immediate response, we would advise contacting the surgery after the 8am-10am busy period on the phone system.
